I have taken up a lot of sports. I used to last about a year or so of dedication to that one sport. I was good. I was constant. I had success and rewards.

One sport. One aspect. One position.

Meagan Fisher recently published article entitled ”just keep going”.

Not only is the article a great read. It makes some great points about learning something new. Meagan wrote this article out of frustration of learning guitar and how to cook a meal. You can feel the frustration in her writing after quitting several times.

I often felt the same. I came across the same hurdles.

Here is my thoughts on why you should keep going.

In today’s world we are always connected and this is a fabulous thing. It allows us to collaborate, share ideas and stimulates our minds to be creative. We can find inspiration in other peoples ideas, creations and success’s. The main focus of my blog is self-learning web design. At the start i mainly focused on learning the technologies. When it came to stimulating ideas for new web designs i often struggled. So i connected with others. and leveraged other peoples designs to explore and learn. I found designers that shared their inspiration, gave insight into there design processes. It was clear i required a process that would allow me to be inspired to create fresh new web designs. The main thing i learned is that inspiration is ongoing process, it takes practices and requires a new way of thinking. It is often a misunderstood, hard to define word. Even now defining inspiration is difficult at times it appears magically. So how do we process our inspiration and use it to produce fresh new designs?

Copy for practice to improve. Copy the inspiration for a fresh design that is unique. At the start of my web design journey I struggled to produce designs of my own. This was not lack of creativity. Its was that i could not make sense of copying the inspiration. I quickly realised that I feared copying others work. At school we are told not to copy. In my own mind there was a battle between wanting to learn and fear of not being original. The idea that you must not or should not, copy others, is false idea. Even on the web the idea of copying inspiration ignites controversial debates. Copying others that are successful is a good starting point for any new web designer.

Green light for a 30 Day Challenge

While i was culling my old bookmark folder, i came across a link to Rookie Designer a site i used to visit. Straight away my eyes were drawn to a post title Bit of Inspiration: 30 Day Challenge. As the owner of Rookie Designer was inspired by the article, i too have taken inspiration from it. The idea is really simple think about something that you always wanted to add or subtract from your life then try it for 30 days. It doesn’t have to be ground breaking can be something really simple. Matt Cutts talks about how small changes are more sustainable and the 30 days are made to feel more memorable. He shares some of his own experiences of trying something new, and it has clearly changed his life.
